I hope everyone is staying cool during the summer and have your fans and air conditioning running!

Speaking of running, there’s a 5K in Pana this Saturday. It’s the Tooth Trot 5K, which is a fund-raiser for Happy Teeth/Happy Kids. Nikki Carls is hosting the race at the Lincoln Prairie Bike Trail and here are her words about the organization the run is raising money for:

“Happy Teeth/Happy Kids is a non-profit organization that was founded by the executive director, Dr. David Trost. It is funded by grants and donations, to help supply the dental needs for children in the state of Illinois. Children are slipping through the cracks when it comes to their dental health care. Happy Teeth/Happy Kids helps to fill in the cracks. We are signed up through the Wells Fargo Program, that we are giving back to the community of where we live and work.

“We are gifted a house, plus a check, to revitalize a house in a community and then we put it on the market to sell. The money from the sale of the house is used to help a child have a happy, healthy smile. I am a Grant Writer for Happy Teeth/Happy Kids. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Happy Teeth/Happy Kids funds for the restorative – (fillings, extractions, etc. or transportation costs) portion for Miles of Smiles. I am a Registered Dental Hygienist for Miles of Smiles, Ltd. which is a mobile dental school based program for exams, cleanings, sealants, and also restorative procedures, where there is a need. Happy Teeth/Happy Kids helps to fund the restorative program for Miles of Smiles.

“I wish everyone could see all the great things that is so rewarding, from both of these programs. I am truly thankful to be involved to help put a happy, healthy smile on a child’s face. I hope to see some familiar faces out at the race! I’ll be there running it.”

And so will I, Nikki.

I can’t believe school is almost here. It seems like a few days ago was the start of the summer.

I hope everyone had a great summer and that they are enjoying the last days of it I’m actually getting a little excited for school to start back up. I can’t wait to see what this year holds!

It’s gonna start being time to shop for school supplies. Make sure to check out the list in the Pana News-Palladium’s Back-To-School tab. There are still some copies on the front counter at the News.

“Jake the Snake,” that’s what we’ve lovingly called him since his arrival at the Latonis home some 14, now going on 15, and many happy and fulfilling years ago.  Shown below running for his team at a 5 Team meet on the Carol Schramm Track at Brummett Field on Thursday, May 8.

jake

Panthers Case Hudlin (left) and Jacob Latonis (right)

He edged out  teammate  Panther, Case Hudlin, in the 3200 – 2 mile run.

Teams in the 5 way meet were Waverly, Litchfield, Jacksonville, Illinois School for the Deaf, and Pana of course.

It was undoubtedly a happy occasion for Jacob, a Freshman.  He beat his opponent Case by 1/10th of a second.  The strange thing about it is, when Jake, just beginning his training especially in running, is in his mind running against his own best time and the clock, and not necessarily his opponent.  Hard for FFF to get used to that method.

But to coaching staff and Jake, think it is a wonderful tool in the profession of coaching.  Tis always trying to beat another person.  It’s not the same now.  The only person your competing against is the clock and yourself.  Not the concentration needed to think or worry about your competition, just yourself, this seems to us!

Would work to reduce the pressure of the pre-race tension, and wasting time, nerves and energy, worrying about the reputation of the other guy and how good/bad he might be.  Sorta like the getting ready “to jump” the ball in a cage game.  But our “still little guy” in our mind, no matter what we think, is happy in what he is doing.  And what make him happy makes his Grandma Doris and FFF happy too.

Even though he’s FFF’s grandson and he really has to fall out of sync before we question anything he does… And before we question anything he does, we know ahead of time we’d realize that we are a bit prejudice so we compensate.

But we know he is a good young person, and also know he works hard at his running thing.

If someone were to say “Well you should”, and FFF would say “I guess so because I’m his Grandpa!”  And then we would reply, also “You bet, and I love him in terms of the question ‘How many world’s full?'”

And if the answer from any of our children “that the good God has blessed us with” comes back “world’s full”, or anything between the “whole” even once, we are overjoyed!  “You shouldn’t talk like a baby to your children as such” people will say!

And will reply, respectfully as possible “Appreciate your concern” but as long as I love with them, want to laugh and cry with them, it’s appreciated but if it’s all the same, I think We’ll paddle our own canoe (and their bottoms too, when needed)!

Oh yes, almost forgot, love them too! Ha!

IIIII

Have so much fun writing to you about all this.  We have wondered many times how and why you put up with us!

But actually must say thanks and hope you’ll not make us want to stop anytime soon.  Oh yes – and all you have to do if this stuff is to much… is to turn the page for relief!  Ha!

IIIII

ENJOY CHAUTAUQUA DAYS COMING UP!

Close your eyes and imagine Pana as it was 80-100 years ago.

Streets bustling, railroad noise, coal mine sounds, chickens clucking at the nearby poultry house, roosters crowing at early dawn, etc.!  Cars neatly parked diagonally and in neatly marked parking slots at sidewalk edges downtown.

Plenty of traffic on Main, Second, Third, and Fourth streets, especially and around the Pana Post Office.  Side streets full of traffic too.

Have fun and remember those who are not with us, and who we wish were.

IIIII

So long…

Man, it is starting to cool down again! I hope everyone is staying warm out there.

Pana’s Track and field season is slowly closing. We only have four meets left with one more being at home.

Last night, the boys team beat Rochester at home in a dual meet. The girls did a good job, but they lost to Rochester.

Better luck next time, girls!

–––––

The rain has slowed up the baseball and softball teams but they are getting games in. The girls soccer team is really playing well and are playing in a tournament at Centralia this week.

Well, that’s all for this week!

Hey people of Pana, Jacob here.

There is a lot going on this weekend for Pana students.

Friday, Pana High School has its first track meet of the year for boys and girls. The first scheduled meet was canceled because of cold weather on Tuesday. It is a relay meet at Litchfield that starts at 4:00 p.m.

Girls soccer and softball have played a few games and the soccer team is 2-0 while the softball team is 1-1. They’ve got more games coming up this weekend and next week. Boys baseball has games today, Saturday and Monday. It’s a busy time. If the weather will get better, it will be a lot better for the players and the fans.

Also this weekend is Confirmation at St. Patrick Church! The Bishop will be down and we will be able to meet him.
